Legal Status

The members of chambers are self-employed barristers who provide legal services as sole traders.

Like other barristers practising in England and Wales, members of chambers are bound by the Bar’s code of conduct.

Barristers in chambers are regulated by the Bar Standards Board. You can search the Barristers’ Register on the Bar Standards Board’s website: https://www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/regulatory-requirements/the-barristers’-register/.  This shows:(1) whether a barrister has a current practising certificate, and (2) whether a barrister has any disciplinary findings, which are published on the Bar Standards Board’s website in accordance with their policy. Alternatively, you can contact the Bar Standards Board on 020 7611 1444 to ask about this (or e-mail ContactUs@BarStandardsBoard.org.uk).

Because of their self-employed status, and as a result of the way in which the English Bar as a whole is organised, it is frequently the case that different members of chambers are on opposite sides of a case. As in any other situation, members will conduct themselves with the highest degree of professionalism. This has never given rise to any conflict of interest and the clerking team have systems in place to prevent any problems arising from such a situation.

All barristers at Three New Square maintain professional liability insurance provided by the Bar Mutual Indemnity Fund, managed by the Bar Mutual Management Company, 90 Fenchurch Street, London EC3M 4ST. Coverage is worldwide, subject to the terms of cover of the Bar Mutual.

Full details, together with details of barristers’ registrations for VAT, are available from the clerks.
